Unfortunately I forgot to put the batteries in my camera...dumb...so I dont have any pictures but the teacher was taking some and she said she'd email them to me! The last day was sad, and all the teachers and nuns kept hugging me and saying goodbye. The little babies made me a card (or their teacher did) and my older class made me a really cute card with their handprints on it. It was adorable. The teacher also got me a little present which was a Guatemala purse, so that was really sweet. Im going to miss the daycare alot, but I feel like I really did help out there and that they really appreciated my help.
After work we had lunch and then we had a our final wrap up with Virginia. Tomorrow is the last day we will see her :( :( :(. But we talked about how we felt our experiences had been, the best and worst parts of the trip and how we feel that it has changed us and our world-view. I dont know how I will feel when I get back to Texas but I do know that this has been an absolutely amazing experience and I will really miss everyone here, especially Virginia. It was kind of a sad talk but I do really hope to come back someday so I dont feel like it is goodbye forever. We also got to put our handprints on the wall with all the other past volunteers, which was pretty cool.

I also started packing today since we are leaving for Antigua tomorrow afternoon and we wont be back until Friday night. It will be a miracle if I fit everything in my suitcases. I started a pile of stuff I'm ok with leaving here, its going to be that packed. So wish me luck with that. I dont know what we're doing tonight, but we'll see!

It worked out perfect actually because there were only 8 kids because of the holiday and one 1 boy. I had the kids make flowers out of pipe cleaners and tissue paper and they loved it!
Today it was kind of sad because it was my second to last day and alot of the kids werent there :( Since I wasnt at work on Friday, I didnt get to say goodbyw to alot of them who arent here this week, so I wil definitely miss them. There was also a 9 year old in class today since she didnt have school and she really wanted to learn english so I talked with her alot of the day. She told me she wants to learn english so that she can go to college in Los Angeles, haha. I told her to try Texas instead.

After work we had Guatemalan Chinese food for lunch...interesting. But I also got a delicious chocolate covered mango!! mmmm. We dont have any plans this afternoon so I've been working on a project to bring to class tomorrow for my last day. Since the teacher doesnt know any English I made little labels with the English words for things to put around the classroom. I also made a little clock for her to help teach numbers in English, and a color chart. On the color chart there are the Spanish words on top and then they can flip it open to find the English words. I dont know when the next volunteer will be at that placement so I just wanted to makes sure that the teacher keeps working with the kids on their english and they dont forget everything. It made me laugh to day because the kids were doing their usual thing where they ask me to say things in English .."Como se dice ____??" and they kept saying the English words for things instead of Spanish like, "Como se dice Bunny??", so that was funny and it's nice to see they actually do remember some of the words I've been teaching them even if they dont realize it. Their two favorite words though are still "monkey" and "cookie", of course.

Tonight we watched the Awakenings after dinner, which was a pretty good movie, I'm surprised I havent seen it before because I know I've heard about it. Me and Abbey also played ERS for awhile and she absolutely killed me, I'm a slow slapper...not good. Then we played Gin, which was pretty complicated but fun for awhile. It was a good night.

So Friday I didnt have work, as I said before there was this big demonstration in Zone 1 blocking off a lot of the streets. What happens is that the university students from all over come to Guatemala City and have kind of a political movement. They made floats like the ones in religious processions but they were making fun of religion and of politics in Guatemala. The whole thing is basically a parody on their society, and a reason for all the students to party in the streets. So Friday morning I walked down to the Park to see what all the commotion was about and it was pretty crazy! Here are a couple videos and pictures of the whole thing... (also, word of warning, the masks that they wear look a bit like KKK masks but that has nothing to do with this procession)
After all this I came home for lunch and we basically decided there was no way we were going to be able to fins a place to stay in Monterrico or the Lake for the weekend because everyone here is off work for Semana Santa, so we decided to stay in the City. Me and Debbie walked to the Central Market and tried to do a bit of shopping, to me it was a bit too small compared to the other markets we've been to, but I got a couple of things and it wasnt a total bust. We were going to see a movie, but the cab we called got a flat tire, so they called another one but the radio system they use to communicate between cabs was down, soooo we didnt get to do that. So we decided to walk to Tacontendo for a bit and we got to watch some ESPN and even drink budweiser! which is really hard to find here.

Saturday: we got to sleep in!!! After we finally got up and ready me and abbey decided to go to this market we found online called Mercado de Artesanias. Well it turns out that this market is right next to the airport...so on one hand it was pretty nice and they had alot of cool stuff, but on the other it was way pricier than any other place we have been in Guatemala. All of the stuff already had price tags on it and they werent willing to bargain like all the other shops, so we didnt stay long. Luckily we had a nice surprise and the zoo was right next door! Neither of us really knew what we were getting ourselves into with the zoo or what to expect, but it was pretty awesome! They had a beautiful white tiger, tons of different types of jaguars, and my new favorite animal, the marmoset, soooo cute. Also they had raccoons??? It was weird to see raccoons at a zoo, but I guess they arent as common here as they are in Texas.

Then we went to the VIP movies!! In the mall they have a separate VIP theatre where you can order food and drinks while you eat. Before we went in Me and Abbey were joking about how nice the theatre to be, thinking it was ridiculous, but we walked in and the seats were full out recliners!! It was the most awesome movie theatre I've ever been in. We saw the Hunger Games, and it was ok...I knew I didnt want to see it, it was just different from the book and how I pictured it would be. Also I feel like it really wouldnt have made any sense to someone who didnt read the book, but oh well, the theatre was nice! After we all went to Cien Puertas and Tacos and Tequila.

Today: we slept in again! After we got up me and abbey decided to walk up to the Central Park market since it is usually huge on Sundays. Well we were surprised when we got there and the streets were crazy packed because it was Palm Sunday! There was a huge procession passing through the park area right when we showed up and luckily we got to see most of it, it was kind of hard to get pictures with the crowd, but it was so beautiful!

Tuesday: Work went well, I brought this braided thing and some clips to make an art display area for the kids in the class. I think they liked seeing their work up there, and the pictures on the line now are the macaroni art we made on Monday.

After work we just kinda chilled till Spanish lesson, and it was later than usual so we had all taken naps before and we were all pretty tired, but regardless, Spanish was good, and we even learned some words in Katchikel too! That night me and abbey decided we wanted Italian food so we found this place online called "Jake's Tomate Bar" that was supposedly good. So we got a taxi over to zone 10 and got all the way over there only to find out ONCE AGAIN that the place no longer exists...seeing a common theme here? Well luckily we were in an area with alot of good restaurants so we wandered around until we found a place called Mexico Lindo with awesome Mexican food, and it wasnt a total bust. Also the toilets there are so weird, they have this thing where the seat is basically covered in some sort of plastic wrap and there is a crank on the back of the seat that you turn when its done and it refreshes the wrap...

Wednesday: At work I had a pretty normal day, I got a really cute video of a kid though, he's pretty camera shy. He's 2 and he just learned the word "mariposa" so he was running all over the patio and pointing to all the butterflies yelling "posa! mariposa!" it was adorable, but he kinda stopped when I pulled out my camera.
After work we went on a group field trip to Antigua to a coffee museum and plantation and a Mayan music museum. The coffee museum was pretty cool and we got to taste coffee beans and even chocolate they made there! It was funny cuz they kept talking about how adding sugar to coffee ruins it, and anyone who knows me knows that my own philosophy on that is a bit different.."I like my sugar with coffee and cream."

It is basically like a painted canvas with elaborate scenes in front of it and on the floor there is an "alfombra" made out of painted sawdust and vegetables and there are lights and music going on during all of this. These are found in the main churches during lent as a way of showing respect to God and celebrating Holy Week. Again sorry about the poor quality of the pics, the lighting was terrible.

Im excited to see alot more of these vigils during Semana Santa. After the church Virginia took all of us out to a really nice ITALIAN dinner in Antigua at a place called Tre Fratelli. It was delicious and Im so glad we finally got our Italian fix in. It was kind of sad though because Virginia said it was our goodbye dinner since we are leaving next Saturday and we'll be in Antigua for Semana Santa wednesday-friday :(

Today: Work went well but I got there way later than usual because there was a procession going on in Zone 1 where I work and they had a ton of roads blocked off so I got dropped off last instead of first. It was ok though because I finally got to see where everyone else is working and I've been wanting to do that for awhile. After work we went to the Popol Vuh museum at the private university here in Guatemala City. If you dont remember the Popol Vuh was the Mayan scripture book equivalent. But interestingly the museum didnt have a whole lot to do with that. They more showed us lots of old artifacts they had found in excavations and in lakes in Guatemala which were given as sacrifices to the gods. They were still pretty cool, unfortunately they wouldnt let us take any pictures in there. But afterwards they took us to learn how to make Mayan pottery! It was so cool! I wasnt very good, but I had fun and made a coffee cup and a bowl thing. The symbol in the middle of the bowl is actually a glyph that is of the date December 21, 2012.

Overall its been a pretty awesome week. I actually dont have work tomorrow because there are all kinds of crazy processions and demonstrations going on by my placement and I wont be able to get in. There are the usual processions that happen every Friday during lent, but they will be even bigger since it is the last week before Semana Santa, and there is also a huge student demonstration going on. Apparently there is some sort of secret student organization in all the campuses across Guatemala and they wear masks and put on plays and parades and demonstrations as parodies of Holy Week and of the Guatemala government. Tomorrow is the biggest one of they demonstrations and so it's going to be pretty crazy around here. Me and abbey are still trying to decide what to do this weekend, so we'll see what happens!

Thursday: We had of work to go on a field trip because our cook Dona Mari is leaving us :( and we wanted to giver her a going away thing. We went to a place called Sabana Grande about an hour away from our house and brought lunch. We really had no idea what to expect but it was amazing. Sabana Grande is in the middle of the forest area on land owned by the university for agricultural students. It was this park away with picnic tables, grills, lodging, pools, forest hiking trails and, my favorite part...a waterfall and river! We spent most of the morning swimming in the waterfalls and then grilled chicken and steak and everyone had lunch together, me, abbey, clark and the whole staff was there. It was soo much fun and we are so lucky we got to go there :)

After we got home that night me and abbey decided to go out to dinner with her friend Brena from work to Fridays! We met up with Brena, her cousin Andrea and her friend Anita and had a pretty awesome dinner. They were a really good time, and Brena is so nice, we'll prob try to hang out with them again.

Friday: Work was fun, I brought macaroni and penne noodles and had the kids paint them to make necklaces! The only problem was that the macaroni was too skinny for the string to fit through so we just had to use the penne noodles and saved the macaroni noodles for another project. Friday afternoon right after lunch me abbey and clark set out on a grand adventure. The plan was to go to these waterfalls and pools called Semuk Champey. That is not what happened. So Friday we took a charter city bus to this town called Coban. Overall the bus wasnt bad but there was this couple in the seats right in front of us that was taking PDA to a whole new level. So that was cool....not. Heres some videos from the drive, and one of them is some sort of procession we saw on the way.

So we ended up at a hostel called Casa Luna which was actually pretty nice and we went to eat at a yummy restaurant across the street!

Saturday: The next morning we got up and decided that we werent going to take a tour from Coban through Lanquin onto see Semuk but that we'd rather find our own way to Lanquin and then walk to Semuk...So we finally found a bus going to Lanquin and we loaded up for the 2 hour drive. Luckily it ended up that the guy next to us on the bus worked at a hostel in Lanquin, so we had a place to stay! But unfortunately by the time we got to Lanquin it was like 1 and the park where Semuk is closes at 4...so there was no way we were going to be able to make it. We were all really disappointed to have gone all that way only to not get to see the falls, but then we stopped and looked around for a minute and realized just how beautiful the place we were staying in Lanquin was. The hostel is on top of a mountain, surrounded by beautiful terrain, and it even has a river on the property. The people who worked there was amazing, and all in all it was alot of fun.

Sunday: We got in a shuttle at 8 in the morning for our 7 hour drive back to Guatemala City. So that was crazy long, and uncomfortable, and just not a good time. And after we got back here that night we were all pretty exhausted and we basically just went to sleep.

Today: At work we used the macaroni we painted friday to make the letters of their first and middle names on paper. They turned out pretty cute and I think its interesting how many of the kids here actually go by both names, its very different from our culture. This afternoon we had a lesson on Semana Santa (Holy Week) in Guatemala. Our guest speaker basically showed us pictures and videos of the different processions during the week in Antigua and Guatemala City and explained to us the meaning behind all of them. It was really interesting and basically it just got me REALLY excited for next week in Antigua :) Cant wait! Also 2 new volunteers got here on Saturday, there is Debbie from Puerto Rico, and she is a nurse, and Joe (Ironman) from Cleveland who graduated high school a semester early and decided to come here. So far they are really cool, and theyll both be with us in Antigua! yay! Well I gotta go eat dinner, Ill update later.

this post is titled after the 2 most common words heard in our house...

So Monday night we didnt really do anything, after dinner me and abbey watched American Beauty and went to bed, I was feeling pretty crappy.

Tuesday: work was fun on tuesday, nothing really out of the ordinary happened there but after lunch we got to have a different kind of Spanish lesson! we went to the palace in central park! It was built by general Jorge Urbino when Guatemala was under total military rule, but now it is mostly like a white house type of governmental building. Some cool things about it are: like every room has a different type of chandelier, and they are all beautiful, Jorge Urbino put his fingerprint on every door handle, the number 5 is very repetitive because it was his wife's favorite, and in what used to be a garage all the stained glass windows were destroyed at least partially by a bomb and were never fixed. Here's a few pictures of the palace but there's more on facebook, sorry alot of them are blurry and such but they didnt let us use any flash and I didnt have a tripod.
After lunch we went and had another Spanish lesson adventure. We went to the topographical map of Guatemala down the street. The map is really cool, it used to have water flowing through it where all the lakes and rivers were but it dried up and it doesnt work anymore i guess. Also all around the map are trees that are the kind used to make Mirimbas and so they are all named after famous mirimba players! pretty cool! Here's a couple broad pictures, but there area ton more on facebook of course.
At school during the morning gymnastics lessons I do for the kids I havent been feeling well and so I was super out of breath and the kids were making fun of me cuz I couldnt keep up with them. But after that we made the bunnies (conejos) I brought and for the most part I was pretty impressed by them, but there were a few that were definitely ridiculous. I wish I had brought my camera cuz we had some pretty messed up bunnies goin on in my class...like eyes all upside down, feet instead of noses, some just gave up completely and glued things wherever they wanted, but hey, at least they were occupied for a bit. Later on I brought out the awesome playdoh I made and the teacher was pretty excited to have some more for the kids. The kids kept bringing me the playdoh and asking me to make chuchitos (puppies) and munecas (dolls) for them. Only problem is that I definitely cant sculpt so we had some dilapidated puppies running around our classroom.

At lunch we were all sitting, eating, as happy as can be when Virginia suddenly said..."Do you know what you ate last week??". Never a good sentence to hear. Well come to find out we all ate cow tongue last week....and I know exactly which dish she was talking about cuz the meat was super fatty and slimy. gross. some warning would be nice, but Virginia thought it was pretty funny.

After lunch we finally got to go drop off our laundry!! yay! I really hope it doesnt get stolen. And then we had a lesson on the Mayan calendar. Mario was the name of the man giving the lesson and he explained to us the cycles of the Mayan calendar and the way of Mayan life. He explained to us how Mayans feel a deep connection with everyone and everything in the universe and for that reason they are very respectful of our Earth. He told a story of how when he was little his grandfather worked with wood and for this reason he needed to go out to the forest and cut trees. Well one day he went with his grandfather and before he cut down the tree he told Mario that they needed to ask forgiveness because they were killing a living being and disrupting our universe. I thought this was a very interesting way of thinking especially when we come from a culture in the US where it is rare to have any respect for nature. They have a saying in Mayan culture that relates to our golden rule that is Wachalal or in English-"I am you and you are me." This is a way of saying that we are all part of the greater universe and so whatever we do to harm one another harms us as well. My favorite saying was "Aj in tzagat" which means "Sin usted no estoy completo" or "without you I am not complete". This saying was not just relating to another person though but that without the trees, the wind, fire...etc. no person is complete.

Mario also told us what our birthday meant according to the Mayan calendar. My birthday is I'x which is the sign of mother earth. This sign is related closely to women, mountains, strength, vigor, vitality and feminine energy. People who are born on my birthday have a destiny of Iq' which means wind. These people are strong, vigorous, intelligent, daring, patient (no) and make good decisions. On the downside they can be easily angered, proud, vain, and can give in easily to the 7 shames (sins) -- which I sure hope is not me. On this date you should offer forgiveness by mother nature for crimes committed against her. Mario also told us of a story of the "evil eye" which is thought to be an evil spirit that descends upon children. You can clear this spirit from the child by passing an egg or a duck over them. He told us of how one time he thought his son was effected by the evil eye and so his aunt passed a baby duck over the child and the son was bette within a half hour, and an hour later the duck was dead. Virginia also told us of how she passed an egg over her granddaughter who she believed to be effected and she was immediately better and when Virginia cracked the egg open after this, the egg was rotted. So the lesson was very interesting and also Mario said the world isnt going to end....so just calm down people.

Now we're just hanging our before dinner so I'll update later!lili2011http://www.blogger.com/profile/16709163475990372880noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3689495238903269336.post-16864855155950278692012-03-18T19:44:00.000-05:002012-03-18T19:44:43.128-05:00PLAYDOHSo last night we ended up going to see "All Good Things" or as they titled it in Spanish "Crimen en Familia"...i dont really know how they came up with that translation. Luckily the movie was in English (yay!) with Spanish subtitles. To see a movie we had to go over to zone 10 and the theatre was inside Oakland Mall, which was insanely nice. It was amazing the difference between this place and the street stores in our part of town. The mall had bumper boats, a waterfall, a train that went all over and tons of nice restaurants and fancy shops. It was crazy. Also when you go up to order your ticket here ($5) you get to see a seating chart of the theatre and pick out what seat you want, which is such a good idea. Overall the movie was pretty bad and crazy long, and it was pretty funny that they were playing that movie in the theatre since it came out in 2010, but I guess that movies come out later here. But the theatre was really cool and so was the mall. After we got home we pretty much just went to bed, which let me tell you is no easy feat in this town where there are crazy sounds all night long. As a small demonstration I took a video so yall could hear the noises outside our window before we went to bed...
Today: today we got to sleep in again :) but we missed banana pancakes for breakfast :(. We went to the grocery store after we finally got up and going cuz I wanted to make some playdoh for my students. Well once we got home I tried take one of playdoh, and it was a HUGE fail. The "playdoh" had the consistency of thick glue and it was impossible to get it off my fingers and into the trash can, so that was sad. But I dont give up that easy. So take 2... i realized that we didnt have any food coloring so we got creative and used abbey's red tea to dye the dough and I made it in the microwave this time off a different recipe I found online and this time...SUCCESS!!! yay!! I think my kids will really like it because as of now they have one can of playdoh to share between all of them so they each only get a tiny piece.

Thursday: At work we worked on this worksheet I brought for the kids but only the older ones could do it and I'm not really sure they enjoyed it so I probably wont be doing that again. But at recess the kids tried to use the beach ball again and I kept having to blow it up like every 2 minutes cuz it would deflate from all the holes and I couldnt even begin to find them all to tape them us sooo I'm going to have to find a new ball.

After work we went on a field trip!! yay! So at first we all piled into the car (all 12 of us) and went for an hour long drive...that part was rough. But definitely worth it. Our first stop was at a mirrador (lookout) on the way which over-looked the city of Antigua and it was absolutely beautiful.
After this we continued our drive and stopped at an old monastery at the edge of Antigua. It used to be a huge Cathedral with a Monastery attached but it was destroyed in an earthquake. After the earthquake no one cleaned up the ruins and it was just abandoned. Which is actually lucky for us because it was pretty awesome. We all got to wander around the ruins and then we got to this one part with a locked door....well Virginia did some sweet talking got a guard to unlock it for us and we all got to go into this secret blocked off room, it was so cool! I felt like a badass. Here's some pictures of this place, but there are a ton more on facebook.

So after the monastery we got back in the car and drove to this small Mayan town outside of Antigua called San Antonio Aguas Calientes. Some of the women in this town were working to preserve their culture and so they put on presentations of Mayan culture and they put one on for our group. The first part of the presentation was showing us how they wove all the clothing and rugs and blankets. They told us that by the time the girls are 8 years old they have already just about mastered the process, and let me tell you, it is insanely complicated. They dont use looms or anything, everything is done by hand. They showed us a small shirt they had woven and said it would take about 6 months to make if they worked 8 hours a day. It kind of makes you feel bad for trying to haggle with them about the price, because its so obvious about how much work went into it.
After that they showed us typical dress for Mayan men and women in their community and showed us a mock Mayan wedding! Clark and Jill are now happily married, big congratulations to them. They told us that in Mayan culture the groom's family pays for everything, and that there are all kinds of hand-woven gifts that the bride must make for all the members of the groom's family. All these gifts take about a year to finish and actually the bride for the mother of the groom is something that the bride already made when she was 14 years old as a sort of rite of passage. Also the typical wedding is about 12 hours with the ceremony and reception and everything and after all this the bride has to go over to the groom's parents house that night and show the mother in law that she can make tortillas and coffee before she can go home with their son. Its actually pretty funny. At the ceremony there is also a part where they put incense over the bride and groom and the lady leading the presentation (her name was Liliana) told us they make sure to purify the groom really well.

So after the wedding they let everyone shop because alot of the women had little shops set up in the area where the presentation was. I didnt end up getting anything because I didnt bring enough money since I didnt know we were shopping. But after that we got to make corn tortillas!! This Mayan woman showed us how they made a typical tortilla and let us do it! Mine turned out pretty bad and I actually dropped the first one so its probably a good thing I'm not Mayan cuz I would never get married.
Then we had to go home...but as soon as we got home we basically jumped back in the car because I guess someone had made dinner reservations at this place in zone 10. Zone 10 is where all the big hotels are so its really Americanized and everything is a bit more expensive. But the restaurant was really nice, all the waiters were dressed in traditional Mayan outfits and the food was amazing. Im glad we went, but it was more expensive than I wanted it to be so we probably wont be going back.

After work we actually didnt have anything to do, so we got to take naps!! yay! After that me Abbey and Clark decided to go out and we found this really cool place where there was some live music! They played a good mix of stuff in English and Spanish and I think we'll definitely be going back there.
TODAY: today we have pretty much been useless. We've been really taking advantage of having nothing we have to do and pretty much we've been laying around the house all day. Everyone else left today so its just gonna be me abbey and clark for this week, good crowd. Me and Abbey tried to do laundry today, so we lugged our huge laundry bags 3 blocks down the road only to realize when we got there that it was closed...blah. So now we're trying to figure out how to see a movie in English here, wish us luck!

HEY THE INTERNET IS BACK!!! Sorry for not updating the past
couple days with all these new people in the house the internet has been super
sketchy. So here is goes…

Sunday: So the new people got back Sunday night, it’s a
group of 8 but theyre not all together. There’s a dad and his daughter (Dan and
Grace), two friends from college ( Jill and Terry-Ann) and everyone else is by
themselves: Kathy, Mishiah, Sarah and Caitlin. Sunday night we just kind of
hung out and played a little uno before bed and did the basic getting to know
you conversations…blah. Also it was the longest game of uno I’ve ever heard
of. So that’s all I remember of
Sunday.

Monday: Work was good, pretty much the same as usual, except
that the teacher had asked me to bring in a craft for the kids to make Munecas
(dolls). At least that’s what im pretty sure she asked….anyways I decided to
use the activity as art and to
teach the kids some body parts in English. So at breakfast Monday morning me,
abbey and Natalie started the ridiculous task of trying to draw little dolls
for the kids to color in and glue body parts onto. They were pretty awful, but
luckily kids aren’t too picky and the teacher didn’t laugh at me too much. Just
a little, which is completely understandable. After work we had a history of
Guatemala lesson with Virginia and she showed us this video about the genocides
in Guatemala. Between 1982-1984 the military government here authorized the
killing of hundreds of Mayan people in Guatemala. The men who were responsible
for this are just now being brought to justice and even so, it is only a few of
the men and it has been 30 years. I found it interesting that this event is
something that I had never really heard of; how could genocide just be
forgotten? I think it has something to do with the fact that the United States
supported the military government that committed all these crimes. But after
that me, Abbey and Natalie decided to go on a walk to the Central Park area in
town and check out some of the stores around there. On the way we saw this big
building we’d been by a bunch of times and were like “oh that’s pretty, what is
it?” So we walked inside and it turned out to be a beautiful church that we’d
never noticed. Unfortunately we didn’t have our cameras but we’ll definitely
bring them next time. The church was so ornately decorated and because it’s
lent, in one of the side chapels they had what we thought was a rug on the
floor with purple and gold decorations, but when we got closer we noticed that
it was actually made completely out of sawdust. It was amazing. Here's some pictures I got of the outside on Tuesday, inside ones to come...

And after that Me, Abbey and Natalie met Clark at Tacontendo
for happy hour and dinner, mmmm. The pina coladas there are probably the best
I’ve ever tasted. After that we headed back home where Miguel (the awesome
guard) taught us some puzzle games. One was where you nail a nail into a table
just a bit and you have to figure out how to balance 7-9 other nails on top of
it. It was crazy hard. And the other he tied a rope around your left wrist and
then put a knot in the middle and tied the other end around you right ankle and
you had to figure out how to untangle it. We all tried for like an hour before
Miguel showed us how to do it and it was of course ridiculously easy. It was a
really fun night.

Today:
So today at work I decided to bring a beach ball for recess. Two problems: one-
the kids do not understand how to play volleyball or keep it up and I couldn’t
explain it in Spanish so they all just kept throwing the ball in the air and
then fighting over who got to throw it next. And two- there are barbed wire
rolls all over the top of the building and they hit the ball at them repeatedly
so by the end of recess the ball was like covered in tape where I had tried to
cover up the holes. Overall, it was a fail. After work we just had lunch which
was awesome and now we’re getting ready to go see some Mayan ruins that are
apparently in Guatemala City! And after Virginia says she has a surprise for
us, I’m excited! And then Me, Abbey and Natalie are going to dinner with her
family that lives here in the city. Ill try and take lots of pictures and
update tonight if the internet works! Adios.
*******UPDATE!************

The ruins: So went all piled in the car to go see the ruins and I'm kind of expecting another long trip but much to my surprise we didnt even leave the city. The ruins were actually a site that is currently being excavated in a park in the city. The park is named Kaminaljuyu and there are tons of hills in the park and underneath them they have been finding ruins from an ancient Mayan city. It was pretty cool to see the work in progress going on but the ruins here were still nothing compared to pictures I have seen of Tikal of course. The guide was telling us that when they were building the houses in the neighborhood surrounding the park they found a bunch of arrowheads and other small artifacts and many of them actually have personal collections of Mayan artifacts in their houses. Kaminaljuyu is actually an important ceremonial site for Mayan so while we were at the park we saw three different people building altars and performing ceremonies, it was really cool! Here are some pics from the park but theres more on facebook!
Surprise!: So after we went to the ruins Virginia had said that she had a surprise for all of of so we got driven around for awhile to throw us off and then ended up back at home, where we found out it was a birthday celebration for Dan (the Dad) whose birthday was in March! So I got to experience another Guatemalan birthday. Virginia had bought a pinata and we all got to take turns hitting it, i was pretty intense. After that we ate legit non-taco bell tostadas, which were amazing and some cake. Here's some pictures and video of me and Natalie doing the pinata!

Thursday: so we decided to hit up happy hour. 2 for 1 drinks at tacotendo right by us, and me abbey and natalie had alot of fun there! After we got back us girls and matt and clark decided to walk to a bar called cien puertas where we had some Gallo (the local beer) and met some cool people from minnesota and canada who were filming a documentary about Canadian oil companies exploiting the Guatemalan people. Then we went back towards the house and stopped at taco and tequila to check it out, the owner is friends with Juan Carlos who works here. So thursday night was alot of fun and it was nice to go out and relax some.

Friday: At work on friday there was a birthday party at the school I work at! The parents brought in Pinatas and tres leches cake (my favorite) and pizza and ice cream. It took the kids forever to break the pinata because they're only like 4 years old though so that was pretty funny to watch and one strange thing was that they sung "happy birthday" to the kind in english??? it was weird to hear that but I guess thats not uncommon there. After work we came back to the house and we had to pack like crazy because the drivers showed up early. so we all finally got loaded up and set off on the 3 hour drive to Lake Atitlan. The drive was really pretty but I couldnt take alot of pictures because they just werent turning out the way I wanted them to when I was driving. When we got to the town we had to stop and talk to and pay the guy (a travel agent) who set up the ride for us. He turned out to be a huge jerk and thought we were just stupid americans who he was going to rip off. BUT we kept our heads up and ended up getting a fair price that we had originally agreed on for the ride and we saved a lot of money by booking our hotel and tour by ourselves since he was trying to seriously overcharge us. So me abbey and natalie stayed in Panajachel (a town on the Lake) at the Hotel Primavera, which was really nice! We had a badass shower thank goodness, and nice beds, and it was right in the middle of the town. After we settled in we went to eat at Pana Rock which was a restaurant that basically looked exactly like a Hard Rock and it was pretty good! We met the owner (an American lady) and she had an adorable little pug puppy that was running all over the restaurant with a pink rhinestone collar and a little black hoodie. Then we decided to walk up to this rooftop bar we had seen that was blasting some party music. Well when we got up there, expecting a good time it turned out we were the only people in the bar and they were just playing their music ridiculously loud and giving themselves a light show...a little disappointing so we decided to keep moving. Finally we found La Palapa; this was a bar/restaurant attached to a hostel about a block away from us (by the way if you ask a local, everything is 2 blocks away, no matter how far it may actually be). This place was awesome. It was owned by a lady from Arizona and she thought we were pretty awesome too. We met people from all over the place here, hostels are seriously so cool. We met people from Arizona, Canada, Michigan, Florida, Holland, England and Australia, as well as some really cool locals. There was a house band there playing American dance music in Spanish so that was sooo much fun and we spent the rest of the night there having a great time. Me and Abbey are definitely going to be staying in a hostel on our next trip.

Saturday: We got up bright and early for our boat tour. Our hotel was on Calle Santander which was a road straight down to the lake that was just lined completely with shops and street vendors so on our way to the lake we did a bit of shopping and met a tour guide named Santiago who we ended up renting a private boat ride from to 4 different Mayan villages around the lake. The boat ride to the first town was beautiful and I took a bunch of pictures, you can see we were completely surrounded by mountains and 3 volcanoes and all the little towns (including Panajachel) were just on the side of mountains. We also saw a few really huge houses that were obviously built by retirees who came to Lake Atitlan to live. The first town we stopped in was San Marcos. San Marcos was probably the most touristy of all the ones we stopped in. It was definitely a hippie town full of old white people. There were signs for meditation, yoga, crystal readings and henna everywhere so that was pretty funny. We wandered around the town fro a bit and stumbled on to this hostel there that was so pretty, it had a huge back porch area with bean bags that was right on the water, I would really love to stay there if we get another chance. Then we took the boat to the next town, San Juan. As soon as we got off the boat we realized that the entire town is uphill, like straight uphill, so that was rough but we walked around. This town was very focused on art and there were galleries everywhere, we walked into a few and from what we saw there were some very talented people there. Abbey and Natalie got some ice cream there and I got a COKE, which is a big deal because pretty much all you can find here is Pepsi and Super Cola. This town was a bit sketchier than San Marcos and we ended up walking back to the boat a bit early to head to San Pedro. San Pedro was my favorite town. They had a market area which was fun and then we kept walking further and we found a lookout over the water where people were washing their clothes in the lake and there were a few spanish schools there because most of the people dont even speak Spanish, just a Mayan language. I bought some peanuts from a peanut farmer there and they're pretty awesome. After shopping a bit we went to eat a rooftop restaurant called Allegre that had an amazing view of the lake. It was a restaurant/bar owned by a guy from Scotland and it was really cool. They had pool tables there and they showed movies every night on a projector! The food took forever to get though so we had to get it to go so we could get back to the boat. San Pedro was a good mix of original Mayan culture and touristy areas. Then we headed to Santiago. Santiago was pretty sketchy. From the minute our boat pulled in we were getting rude stares from everyone. This town was definitely the least touristy of them all and they did not like gringas. There was a larger market there though so we ate and shopped a bit before we decided it was time to go. The boat ride back was rough. The water had gotten ridiculously choppy by the time we left and I'm pretty sure we're all pretty sore today from it. I could use a massage. Also me and abbey were dumb and didnt wear sunscreen so we're really burned. haha. Saturday night we went to dinner at a place called Solomon's Porch. It was a restaurant owned by a couple from Florida and husbands was in a band that was playing while we ate. They donate a large portion of their profits from the restaurant to building houses for locals in Panajachel and for scholarships for kids there. They were such nice people and the food was awesome, and so was the Sangria. Then we decided to go back to La Palapa cuz we had promised the owner the night before and it turned out the band of the owner of Solomon's Porch was playing there too! So we hung out there for a bit and headed back earlier than Friday.

Sunday: Today we again got up early to pack everything up and caught our ride back home. We first had him stop in Chichicastenango, which is the biggest marketplace in Guatemala. When we first got out of the car I only saw one street of shops and I was like, "oh this isnt that big", boy was I wrong. It was insanely huge and we only got through maybe a quarter of it. There were tons and tons of people there and it was a bit overwhelming cuz people were yelling at us to buy stuff from everywhere and were coming up to you or sending their kids up to you to get you to buy all kinds of random things. I did end up buying a couple things, and it was a lot of fun to haggle with those people, they really enjoy it actually, its a but strange. In the middle of the market there was a church where people were sitting on the steps selling flowers and burning incense, I guess because it was Sunday. After a while we all got back to the car and finished the drive home. Now we're just chillin back here waiting for dinner (i think it might be pizza!! yay!) and to meet the new people. An insight group of 8 people got here last night and they're only staying a week, but they went to Antigua for the day so we gotta wait for them to get back!
I knew I wouldnt be able to keep up writing in my blog everyday for long. I'm gonna be honest, I wasnt busy, I just wasn't feeling it yesterday. haha. But, regardless, yesterday was a good day!

At work it was pretty much the same but all the kids really started getting excited about English. They out me in the 3 year old classroom for like 30 minutes to teach English alone without any warning though so that was kind of difficult trying to fill that much time without any notice, but I still think it went as well as it could with 10 3yr olds running around in there. Little Jose also confessed his love to me and now only refers to me as "mi amor", which is precious. Josh may have some competition, haha.

After work we ate lunch and then we got to go to our field trip to the winery! We thought maybe this winery was like down the road a bit but we soon found out it was almost 2 hours away, wooo. The drive was pretty though and we got to go through Antigua and a small Mayan village called Santa Maria Jesus on the way. Antigua looked beautiful and very colonial and I'm really excited to go there, me and Abbey are planning on going fro Holy Week in April because we heard there were all kinds of beautiful celebrations there during that time.
Santa Maria Jesus was a tiny town and there were tons of Mayan people. It was interesting seeing their lifestyle as we passed through. Women and children were waiting in a couple in town to collect water because there is no running water in the town. The men and boys were coming back from working during the day in the fields, riding on mules and carrying machetes and wood on their backs.

The problem with this town, as with much of Guatemala was the trash situation. People just threw their trash all over the town and the sides of the road were completely covered in mountains of it. Virginia was telling us that a huge reason for this is because there is no trash pick up in the mountains where they live and also because of the introduction of plastics into their lifestyle in a town where it used to be all natural, biodegradable food; so when they threw their trash on the road, it simply dissolved unlike the trash they have now. Way to go America.

After we got through the town we started this 30 minute drive down possibly the worst road I've ever been down. Virginia said the last few governments of Guatemala completely ignored the road situation and so they are in terrible condition. I'm pretty sure we all almost go sick on this road. FINALLY we reached the promise land.
The winery was small, but beautiful and was on the side of a mountain where you could see a bunch of the volcanoes in Guatemala from the top. Our guide told us how they make the wine and showed us the grapes and the vats for fermenting the wine, blah, blah, blah. Then we got to taste. Personally, I didnt really like much of the wine, since it was mostly white, and there was some sort of strange spice to it that I had never tasted before.
BUT it was still a really cool experience, and the best part was there were PUPPIES there. Their german shepherd just had a litter of the most adorable puppies, and so I got pretty obsessed and we tried to convince Virginia to let us bring one back to home base with us. She actually said yes....but I'm almost positive it was the wine talking.
On the way out of the winery there were tons of coffee trees growing so we got out and picked a couple of berries (did you know coffee beans came in berries cuz I sure didnt) and peeled them where we sucked on the beans which were covered in this gel-like sweet stuff. It was interesting.
The way back down from the winery was way faster and when we got home we had some delicious pasta waiting for us. yay! So overall yesterday was a good day.

TODAY at work I got to lead a surprise gym lesson, which was awesome cuz it kind of tired out the kids, thank goodness, they have wayyyyy too much energy. Then one of the nuns who works there is trying to learn English so we sat and talked for like 30 minutes and tried to help each other out. Her name is Magdelena and she is so sweet, and hilarious, I really like her. The teacher in the room I spend most of the time in is Sr. Patti and she's not a nun, and she is also really funny. I really do enjoy my work there, the women are all really good people ( i mean, theyre nuns) and the children are so sweet and funny.

This afternoon we had a Spanish lesson, and it was pretty helpful, we went over body parts and new things to talk to the children about, Rosario is such a sweet lady. Then we came back to the house and we've been trying to figure out our housing and ride situation for this weekend's trip to Lake Atitlan, which is proving to be extremely stressful. When we're done we've decided to hit up happy hour at tacontendo a couple blocks away. I cant stress enough how much I need a margarita.

Well thats its for now, if you havent already seen, I posted new pics from the winery on facebook so be sure to check em out!lili2011http://www.blogger.com/profile/16709163475990372880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3689495238903269336.post-43163199165603357772012-03-06T08:12:00.000-06:002012-03-07T08:12:55.575-06:00DOSso last night me and abbey ended up watching this ridiculous movie on netflix called flakes about a cereal restaurant...don't waste your time. thats all the update for last night.

Also my mother told me I need to work on my grammar and punctuation since I'm a college graduate...we'll see how that goes. Sorry I'm not sorry people.

Today, second day of work, was pretty awesome again. When I got to work the kids were all really excited to see me and ran up to me yelling "lili!!!!". It was pretty adorable. We worked on more english words today too and most of the kids really couldn't care less but there's this one named Jose who loves english. He is soooo smart and he's only 4 years old; he remembers the words I teach him, like colors and numbers almost immediately. Ello es precioso.

After we got back from our jobs we had the best meal I've had in Guatemala. Seriously. It was a rice and chicken dish with a chicken broth based sauce that was delicious and a salad with this dressing that I'm pretty sure was some sort of avocado ranch, mmm. AND I finally got my fresh pineapple. After lunch Don Francisco (our driver) took us to exchange our money finally, so I'm rollin in the dough haha. But really, their money is so pretty here!

Then we had a Spanish lesson this afternoon, which went really well I think. Our teacher was so helpful and she was mostly just focused on making sure we knew basic commands for our children and were able to talk to them a bit. She's going to be here teaching us every tuesday and thursday so I feel like that'll be really helpful. I was again surprised by how much I remembered!

After our lesson me and Abbey went on our first solo adventure. We went to check out this gym that's really close to us to see about prices and its about $50 so I'll have to see if thats worth it to pay to not get creeped on. Then we went into a pretty sketch discount pharmacy to try and get Abbey some drogas cuz she's been sick the whole time here...but they had no idea what we were trying to say and kept trying to sell us baby aspirin, so we decided to just go to the grocery store instead. We finally got some snacks because dinner is so early here that we need something to tie us over until morning some days, sooo thank god. AND after many problems we got straws!!! We purposely figured out the word for straw before we went and asked a lady working at the store and both her and a man working there just looked at us like we were idiots and led us to a large assortment of different things that were definitely NOT straws, before we had to find them ourselves. So after we found them we brought them over to the lady we were talking to and she was like "ohhhh" and then repeated the EXACT same word we had told her earlier. It was obnoxious. I sometimes feel like here that some people don't even try to listen to us cuz they just look at us and assume "Ohh gringas...they don't know what they're talking about." But mission accomplished none the less.

After that adventure we came home and ate dinner and we've pretty much just been chilling ever since, I think we're all pretty tired, and I'm probably going to bed, so good night!
There are 3 classrooms but so far ive only worked in 2- the 2 yr olds and the 4 yr olds and they are both adorable. the children are so sweet and the teachers and nun who work there were all very welcoming, the only problem is that no one there speaks english so it was kind of a total immersion for me. the 4 yr old kids are really excited to learn english words though so thats good! the 4 yr old teacher where i was most of the day also likes to listen to english pop music, but she doesnt understand any english so it was funny to me because she didnt realize that most of the songs she was playing were definitely not appropriate for children. at lunch time i found out that guatemalans dont eat hot dogs the same way we do...they sauteed the hot dogs in a brown sauce and then chopped them up and served them over rice...it was strange and they called it chi chi but it smelled delicious.

after work we went back to the home base and then went on a city tour. the city is split into zonas which are basically neighborhoods and they are pretty much divided by class and/or what their major product is. one stop we made was at the largest public cemetery in the city and in guatemala they have the above ground mausoleums like in New Orleans. the cemetery was really beautiful except when we got to the back we noticed a terrible smell and our guide Juan Carlos had us get out of the car and walk to the back end of the cemetery where there is a giant ravine and in this ravine was a huge dump where hundreds of people were making their living scavenging through the trash they could resell. the whole area smelled terrible and there were hundreds and hundred of vultures everywhere. after the cemetery we went through the zona where the people we saw below lived and it was just one room shacks full of other peoples trash basically. it was really sad to see. especially when we drove about 30 minutes later through a zona on the other side of town that was so wealthy. this area was filled with gated neighborhoods and houses and american hotels, stores and restaurants. the difference in the areas was staggering.

after that they took us to get some ice cream and i tried dulce de leche ice cream which was pretty awesome! and then we came back to home base and ate and now we're just hanging out, sooo i guess i will talk to yall later! adios!lili2011http://www.blogger.com/profile/16709163475990372880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3689495238903269336.post-10250213089082555342012-03-04T09:37:00.001-06:002012-03-04T14:57:32.517-06:00more detailsok so now that i've had my coffee, heres more details on yesterday! so on getting to our house we met Enrique (guard) and Virginia (director) and they are awesome. Enrique is going to help me with my spanish, and since i keep constantly asking him things i think he may be getting annoyed. after we got in Vince (another CCS volunteer who has been here like 6 times) took us on a walk around a bit of the town and showed us some of the basic places to go, thank goodness we had someone like him here or we'd be lost. in the evening we heard a "band practice" in the street, apparently there is a huge parade every year and bands have to try out to be in it and so they practice constantly in the streets, so thats pretty cool cuz it sounds like there is a parade all the time! then after dinner we all decided not to waste a perfectly good saturday night and walked to a couple restaurants in town where i learned a few things:

even if you just order a drink, you will get food. dont try to refuse.

seeing a guard standing in the shadows with an assault rifle is not a big deal...it happens.

Cerveza mixta- is a mix of light and dark beer, and pretty much just tastes like Shiner

WATCH OUT because apparently they serve beer con tomate o sal...with tomatos or salt mixed, i have no idea why. but just check

there is no "short walk" to the laundromat... its like 17 blocks

guatemalan music videos are very similar to the backstreet boys form the 90's

this town shuts down around midnight or earlier

there are so many parks! there's one like every 3 blocks

and thats about it for now. this morning i finally got out of bed around 7:30 even though i'd been up for what felt like hours, our house is on the main street and its so loud outside, we're really close to the airport, on the bus route and right across the street from a huge church (really pretty) so needless to say i didnt sleep well. after i got up i got to meet the cook/housekeeper Julieta who also only speaks Spanish so thats another person to practice with! yay! then me and abbey tried to do a puzzle in our courtyard only to realize halfway through that it was actually two different puzzles in the same box but neither of them had all the pieces. today we have orientation so i'm pretty excited about that! we also found a calendar with our "cultural activities" for each day listed and it looks like we'll be doing a city tour after work tomorrow and going to a winery on Wednesday! well ill update again later, im going to go get some pictures of the house!

*****UPDATE*****

we went wandering around town this afternoon before lunch and its pretty awesome. they close off part of their 6th street and its just basically a park on sundays where people sell food and walk their dogs and ride bikes, pretty cool. also there are stray dogs everywhere, its really sad. but we walked down the street cuz we heard there was a park at the very end, and oh man we were not prepared for what we saw. at the end of the street was a carnival!!!! with BUMPER CARS! so we obviously had to ride them. well apparently their version of "los carros locos" is a little different in Guatemala, and by different i mean far less safe and far more awesome. the cars were sparking all over the place, you could smell the burning from the cars and when we slammed into each other it was literally like getting in a car accident. pretty sure we all have whiplash, but it was sooooo worth it. then we went back home and got to eat some awesome soup. great day so far and its almost time for orientation!lili2011http://www.blogger.com/profile/16709163475990372880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3689495238903269336.post-49326772531727548692012-03-04T07:39:00.001-06:002012-03-04T07:39:33.657-06:00our first day!Hey everyone!!! I AM IN GUATEMALA!!! and its pretty awesome. so me and abbey did end up staying up all night till our flight this morning so we were both pretty exhausted, but now that i'm here i'm so excited that i dont know that i could nap if i tried. We met Natalie (our other roommate) at the airport in Miami and luckily we were all on the same flight so we got a chance to talk to here and kind of get to know her and shes pretty awesome. i think we're gonna have some fun.

Once we left the airport there was no question that i am definitely gonna be learning some spanish. our driver and house guard both only speak spanish so luckily i have someone to practice with and i was able to kind-of communicate with them, kind of. it will get better, i know it.

but the homebase is awesome!! me, abbey and natalie are all in the same room and we've spent the past couple hours unpacking our stuff and we actually fit it all! anddd now i gotta go eat!

*****UPDATE*******

so i got busy after dinner meeting all the other CCS volunteers and forgot to post BUT it is now 7:30 in the morning and i cant sleep...go figure, so nows as good a time as any. After dinner last night, we went out to a couple of local restaurants as a group and tried some local specials, and i think we"re going to be just fine here :) well im gonna go eat breakfast! later.
I'm going to Guatemala City March 3rd, which is Saturday, which is reeeeally soon. I'm amazed at how fast this trip snuck up on me. Me and Abbey have been going back and forth pretty much constantly with questions and I'm pretty sure that Alexa (our Cross-Cultural Solutions contact) is probably pretty ready for us to just get out of America and stop bugging her.

I've always been a last minute packer so I imagine i'll be throwing things in my suitcase on our way out the door at 3am Saturday morning, no big deal. The only flight without an overnight layover leaves at 5am on Saturday...so I'm figuring I wont be getting much sleep that night anyway.

So me and Abbey got our work assignments today, FINALLY. I am going to be working at Padre Antonio Rocco's child care center. I'll be helping with games and arts and crafts with kids ages 1-6, so that's right up my alley!

In case anyone was wondering I will not be using my cell phone while I'm there so if you want to contact me use this blog, facebook or email me and I'll try to respond ASAP but I know I wont have very much time on the internet daily so it may take awhile. I'm also going to try to post a picture per post on here but I heard that you have to be careful with your camera so we'll see how much I can get.
